Samara Welbourne

Now just turned 16, the Sunshine Coast's Samara Welbourne was an author at the age of 12, one of Australia’s youngest social entrepreneurs, a Queensland Culture Champion (Dept Arts) and the 2014 Sunshine Coast Young Citizen of the Year (an award shared with Bindi Irwin). Samara’s book, How To Make Fairy Houses, was published by Boolarong Press in 2013 and became their best-selling children’s book of the year.

For the last two years whilst living in Bali, Samara used the proceeds of her fairy house business solely to raise money for a number of projects to assist the Balinese. Her current project, with 14-year-old Balinese teenager Tyas, is to build a library in the village of Bungaya, Bali, to support children improve their reading skills and learn English. This project is hosted by Sunshine Coast and Balinese teenagers with help from the staff of Puspadi Bali which assists people with physical disabilities to access rehabilitation services so that they can establish their place in society as productive citizens. Not bad for a kid who initially hated writing! Samara is heading back to Bali in March, 2017 to build the library. Maybe she can convince you to join the project too.
